I
My family

My family - my hair is the light! (Note my son's forehead)
10 Kids + 20 years of surgical practice & 24/7 call --> that exhausted look.

I grew up in northern rural Illinois, son of an engineer and a home ec. major, lived a happy but nerdy childhood with my father teaching me to use machine tools, build boats, model airplanes, ham radios, grind telescope mirrors, sail at Lake Geneva, WI, and stay away from girls.
Then I went to college at U of I - Champaign-Urbana, joined a frat (AKL), studied chemistry, and figured out how to make half-mile trajectory catapults out of Bunsen burner tubing, tour Europe including off-limits military facilities while avoiding soldiers and guard-dogs, and beware the girls my matchmaker grandmother paid to go with me. Then I read the Bible, first as fairy-tale, then with conviction as historical truth, and decided to do something with my gifts to help others. At first I wanted to be a family doc, but I'm too much of a fixer to contentedly watch people destroy themselves with foolish lifestyle choices, so it was surgery for me. "A chance to cut is a chance to cure" and in cases of hemorrhage, get out the cautery, because "charcoal doesn't bleed". "Dilution is the solution to pollution" when you have peritonitis, and "Never let the sun set on an undrained abcess". Now it's time to pass those grey-haired pearls of accumulated wisdom on to the next generation of victims. I still have to correct myself of the habit of referring to my students as my "patients". 27 years of formal education and I still can't get it right!
